Cosmetic chin surgery is also called mentoplasty. The chin is a very prominent part of the face, and facial balance in part depends on the development and proportions of the chin. Cosmetic chin surgery may involve shaving the bone of the chin, insertion of an augmentation to enhance chin structure and improve jaw line, create a cleft or remove a cleft in the chin, as well as repairing any damage done by injury or correcting congenital malformations. Chin augmentation frequently accompanies rhinoplasty procedures to coordinate balance in facial features.
The surgery consists of placing an implant made of silicone in the connective tissue of the chin (fascia), and is held in place by sutures. Some sculpting of bone material is necessary to accommodate the new implant and, when the implant is in place, the remainder of material not necessary is removed.
Cosmetic chin enhancement surgery varies in time length but lasts approximately 2 hours. When the procedure concludes, the plastic surgeon stitches up the incision and bandages the wound appropriately. Recovery time for shin surgery is usually 4 to 6 weeks, and initial limitations on eating are necessary as chewing may affect the healing of the wound and the integrity of the chin implant.
